Position Overview

The substitute teacher aide is responsible for assisting the teaching team with maintaining the daily operations of his/her assigned classroom and the supervision of children and support persons. There will be occasions when the application of duties for this position will extend beyond the normal physical structure of the center. This position requires the person to perform written documentation of activities, incidents/accidents, as well as, conversations with parents and student behavior.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cares for the children in an assigned group under the guidance of lead teacher or assistant teacher in order to meet the children’s physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs.
  • Be actively involved with the children in order to provide guidance as they learn and process information.
  • Assist in making sure ratios are maintained as required by NAEYC standards.
  • Monitor the children in the classroom and outdoor settings and know at all time which children they are responsible for.
  • Assist in the implementation of all activities according to lesson plans, agency policies and procedures, and other written and oral instruction.
  • Responsible for the health and safety of all children under their supervision.
  • Must be flexible in the deliberation of her/his duties.
  • Be cordial and professional at all times when communicating with parents, staff, superiors and visitors.
  • Adhere to mandatory professional development requirements.
  • Report to main office upon arrival for classroom assignment.
  • Competes daily checklist.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned by lead teacher or administrative team.

Professional Development/Training Requirements

Obtain CDA within year of hire date
15 PQAS hours per school year
Competition of the following trainings are required:
Health & Safety
Mandated Reporter
CPR & First Aide
Fire Safety

Minimum Education and Experience

High school diploma/GED, CDA preferred and at least one year of work experience preferably working with young children.
